Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) sent out a strong warning to the rest of the competition in the AFC Cup that they are here to defend their trophy. An 8-1 win over Ayeyawady United will make them a marked target for the rest of the teams in the competition.

Speaking at the post match conference, hat-trick hero and man of the match Safiq Rahim also noted the same.

“We will have to keep improving; everyone knows our game so it will be more difficult for us this season in the competition.”

Having been used from the bench thus far this season, Safiq is hoping that his output against Ayeyawady, which also included several assists, will be the start of better things for him this season.

“The last few games I wasn’t totally fit and therefore I wasn’t able to start games. Now, I feel fit and today’s match proves it. The coach has faith in me and that helps.”

The coach, Mario Gomez is also full of praise for his team captain after his exploits against the Myanmar side.

“Safiq is a very good player and he showed it today. Even when he man-marked by their number nine [Kyaw Zayar Win], he still was able to give such a great performance. That said we do not limit ourselves and rely on only one player.
